Tether E71 to Windows 7 via Bluetooth
Today I accepted a challange to get a Windows 7 laptop connected to the internet by Bluetooth tethering to a Nokia E71 phone. I was impressed how quick and easy the entire process was.
I was using a Toshiba laptop (with built in Bluetooth) running Windows 7 RTM, and using a Nokia E71 mobile phone. Here’s how I did it:
On E71
1. Turn bluetooth on on phone (hold down *)
2. make phone visible on bluetooth (menu > connectivity > bluetooth > my phone’s visibility > shown to all)
On Laptop
1. Go to Start > Control panel > Hardware and Sound > Add a Bluetooth device
2. Follow instructions to add device (enter in number provided in phone, accept computer connection, etc etc)
3.Go to Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet > Connect to the Internet
3.1 Select “No, create new connection”
3.2 Select “Dial-up”
3.3 Select “Standard Modem over Bluetooth link”
3.4 Enter *99# for dial up phone number (number for 3 Australia)
3.5 Click connect
On E71
1. Prompt to accept connection to computer appears, click Accept
On Laptop
1. After about a minute, and various connecting stages, window appears with one option “Browse the Internet now”
2. Connection now appears in list of network connections in the networking task bar icon.
I’ve been trying to do similar on my MacBook Pro for months now, following all sorts of guides on the internet, with no success. On Windows 7, I got it working in ~30 mins using no external resources. I like Win 7!! ![]()

Thanks, really helped me.
28 August 2009, 7:53 pmI can now use my E71 as a modem on my EEE with Win 7. And I don’t have to install all that PC suite guff.

I tried this with my E71, Vodafone (Australia) and Win7 x64 Ultimate with no luck (at first).
I installed the Nokia PC suite in frustration and it created a shortcut for me (but I used the bluetooth connection I created with your instructions). It worked!
The only difference I could see between the one I made with your instructions and the one from the PC suite was that IPv6 was unticked.
Hope this helps someone else
